Your answer bank
Eight to twelve real experiences from your working life, written out in full STAR structure and tagged to every competency they can evidence. Twelve well-built stories cover almost anything a panel asks.
Firefighter Interview Coaching
A fire service interview isn’t a conversation — it’s a scored assessment, and most candidates lose marks for reasons nobody ever explains to them. This is one-on-one interview coaching from someone who has been on both sides of the table: mock panels, STAR-structured answers, and honest feedback until your answers hold.
Have an interview date? Say so when you book and we’ll work backwards from it.

The pattern
Listen to enough mock interviews and the same shape appears: ninety seconds of backstory, fifteen seconds of what the candidate actually did, and no result at all. The panel is already writing before the part that scores.
It’s not a confidence problem. It’s a structure problem — and structure is learnable in weeks, not years.
The work
In this order. Each one only works if the one before it is done.
Eight to twelve real experiences from your working life, written out in full STAR structure and tagged to every competency they can evidence. Twelve well-built stories cover almost anything a panel asks.
Full mock panels on camera, with the follow-up questions a real panel asks. Timed, watched back, repeated. This is where recited answers come apart and real ones get built.
What to wear, what to bring, how to open, what to ask at the end, and what to do in the ninety seconds between the door and the first question. Small things, and panels notice all of them.
What's included
You can find lists of firefighter interview questions anywhere. What you can’t find is someone who will sit across from you, ask them the way a panel does, and tell you honestly what they heard.
I’ve served more than 15 years in the fire service. I know what a chief officer is listening for when a candidate says the thing every candidate says — and how the ones who get hired sound different.
Every engagement starts with a free 30-minute call. Bring your interview date if you have one.
Proof it works
Verified reviews from Mathew’s Google Business Profile.
Mathew was instrumental in my interview success. I was so fortunate to be put in touch with him, as he was the biggest reason I walked into the interview confident, and left with a successful result.
Great experience with this company. They helped me prepare for interviews and taught me how to structure answers using the STAR format, which made my responses much clearer and more confident. Highly recommend their coaching to anyone looking to improve their interview skills.
I hired Mat to help me prep for the hardest interview I have ever done! He is an amazing man to work with! He takes the time to get to know you and what your goals are! And really knows how to get the best out of you!

Questions
Typically two to four people — a chief officer, a training officer, sometimes HR, sometimes a firefighter from the floor — asking a fixed set of behavioural questions in the same order to every candidate. Each answer is scored against a competency list. Some departments now run it over video for the first round; Edmonton uses a seven-station multiple mini interview instead of a single panel.
The format varies. What doesn’t vary is that it’s scored, not judged on feel.
As many as it takes for your answers to hold up under follow-up questions — usually several full runs plus targeted reps on the answers that keep wobbling. The first one is always rough. That’s the point of doing it with me instead of in front of the panel.
I use the competencies departments publish and the question types panels are trained to ask — situational, behavioural, values-based, and the follow-ups that come after each. I don’t deal in leaked question banks, and you should be suspicious of anyone who says they do. If you can answer the competency, the wording of the question doesn’t matter.
Nerves aren’t the problem — unprepared nerves are. Going blank almost always means you didn’t have the experience ready before you walked in, so you were building the answer live. Once you’ve told a story ten times on camera, nerves change how fast you talk, not whether you can talk.
This is the interview stage only. The full program covers every gate from application through offer. If your application is already through and you have an interview date, this is the right page. If you haven’t applied yet, start with the full program.
More is better, but I’ve worked with candidates who had a week. The discovery call is free, and if the timeline is too tight to do it properly I’ll tell you what to focus on in the time you’ve got.
