Application & résumé
The stage that eliminates the most people and gets the least preparation. We rebuild yours so the experience you already have reads as the experience the department is screening for.
Fire Recruitment Coaching
Most candidates don’t get cut because they’d make bad firefighters. They get cut because the process is a black box and they’re guessing at every stage. I’ve spent more than 15 years in the fire service — this is one-on-one coaching through every gate, from first application to the badge.
Coached by a serving professional firefighter. Free 30-minute discovery call, no cost, no obligation.

Sound familiar?
You submit the application. You wait months. You get a form email, or nothing at all. No score, no feedback, no idea which stage you actually failed — so the next attempt is another guess.
That’s the real problem: it’s not a skill gap, it’s an information gap. The people who get hired aren’t braver or fitter than you. They understood what was being scored, and they prepared for that.
Stage by stage
We don’t cram the week before a test date. We work the process the way departments run it — in order, with a plan for each gate. Each stage has its own page if you want the detail.
The stage that eliminates the most people and gets the least preparation. We rebuild yours so the experience you already have reads as the experience the department is screening for.
Structured preparation for written, mechanical and psychometric components so the format stops being the obstacle and you can actually show what you know.
Mock interviews with panel-style feedback. STAR-structured answers built from your real experience, delivered under pressure until they sound like you and not like a script.
Background, medical, and what the first year on the floor actually asks of you — because getting hired is the start of the job, not the end of the work.
What you get
I’ve served more than 15 years as a professional firefighter. I know what the job asks for, what the culture rewards, and what a panel hears when a candidate says the thing everyone says.
This is one-on-one work, built around the departments you’re targeting and the stage you’re actually at — not a video library and a PDF.
It starts with a free 30-minute discovery call. If the honest answer is that you need another year of life experience before you apply, I’ll tell you that instead of selling you a program.
Then the clock matters. Book the discovery call and we’ll work backwards from your deadline rather than starting from scratch.
Be honest with yourself

Mat has been an incredible support in my journey to become a firefighter. He speaks from a depth of experience that instills confidence in anyone interested in the field.
Mathew was instrumental in my interview success. I was so fortunate to be put in touch with him, as he was the biggest reason I walked into the interview confident, and left with a successful result.
Great experience with this company. They helped me prepare for interviews and taught me how to structure answers using the STAR format, which made my responses much clearer and more confident. Highly recommend their coaching to anyone looking to improve their interview skills.
This personalized program supported me through my fire application process. Not only did it set me up for success at every stage, I felt that I had a greater understanding of the firefighter culture as a whole.
Mathew was an incredible mentor, coach, and all around great person to work with! I came to him with the goal of becoming a firefighter…
I hired Mat to help me prep for the hardest interview I have ever done! He is an amazing man to work with! He takes the time to get to know you and what your goals are! And really knows how to get the best out of you!

Questions
Before, every time. Most of the damage is done at the application stage, months before anyone sees you in an interview room, and it’s the stage candidates put the least work into.
That said, if you already have a posting open or a test date booked, we start where you are and work backwards from the deadline.
Most of the men I work with have been through at least one unsuccessful process. That history isn’t a black mark — handled properly, it’s evidence of persistence, which is a trait departments actively look for.
What matters is whether you can explain what you did with the time since. That’s a coachable answer, and it’s one of the first things we build.
Situation, Task, Action, Result. It’s the structure interview panels are trained to score against, and it’s the difference between an answer that sounds like a story and an answer that sounds like evidence.
Knowing the acronym is easy. Delivering it under pressure, without sounding rehearsed, in ninety seconds, about an experience that actually maps to the competency being asked about — that takes reps. There’s a full breakdown in the STAR method guide.
No, and be careful of anyone who does. Hiring depends on the department, the posting, the size of the candidate pool and factors neither of us controls.
What I can do is make sure you’re not the reason you didn’t get hired — that your application gets you shortlisted, that you know what the panel is scoring, and that you walk in prepared instead of guessing.
The stages are broadly consistent across Canadian departments — application, aptitude and physical testing, panel interview, background and medical — but the weighting, the vendors and the order vary a lot. Ontario departments largely run through OFAI certificates; Calgary uses the National Testing Network and a polygraph; Edmonton weights a multiple mini interview at fifty percent.
We build your strategy around the specific departments you’re targeting rather than a generic national template. The province-by-province guide is a good place to see the differences.
Departments hire people, not résumés. Paramedics, tradesmen, military, retail supervisors, teachers — the panel is looking for evidence of judgement, teamwork, composure and service.
You almost certainly have that evidence. The problem is that most candidates have no idea how to present it in the language the panel is scoring.
Coaching sessions run over video call, which is how most candidates prefer it — it fits around shift work and it’s how a lot of first-round interviews now happen anyway. Mock interviews on camera also have a side benefit: you get to watch yourself back.
It depends entirely on where you are. A candidate with a test date in six weeks needs a different plan from someone who hasn’t applied yet and wants to do it properly the first time.
The work is structured stage by stage so it maps to the actual process you’re in. We set the timeline on the discovery call.
The discovery call is free, and it’s a real conversation rather than a sales call. Program pricing depends on how many stages you need and how much time there is — I’ll give you a straight number on the call once I know what you actually need, and no number before then because I’d be guessing.
Thirty minutes, no cost. You tell me where you are in the process and what’s happened so far. I’ll give you a straight read on where the real gap is — which is often not where candidates think it is.
Book it here, or send me a message first if you’d rather.
